Vancouver Island boasts some of the best sport fishing in the world, and at Newton Cove Lodge, we know where to find them! The waters we fish carry all five species of salmon, halibut and a variety of rock and bottom fish.
Chinook (Spring):
The largest of the Pacific salmon with an average weight of 22 pounds. Has a supple flesh, and is also sought by sport fisherman for its size and strength.
Coho (Silver)
The silver is a precocious fish, offering a milder flavorful flesh. It is an amazing fight for anglers, often jumping from the water to great heights.
Chum (Keta)
Has a firm pink flesh and delicate flavor. When treated carefully, keta is highly desired by the food service sector.
Ling Cod:
Without question the Ling Cod is both the ugliest and at the same time one of the very best eating fish.
Halibut:
Halibut have become an important game fish all along the Pacific Coast. The waters off Esperanza Inlet afford the visiting angler many different locations in order to engage this highly prized trophy. The ideal size for harvesting is 20-50 lbs. Any halibut 60 lbs or more would be an important brood stock female and most sportfishers now release them.
